submeat's top 100 tracks of 2003: songs to download and love
#97 "Pon De River, Pon De Bank," Elephant Man (VP/Atlantic)
One of '03's most sheerly exciting singles came from Elephant Man, a former member of the late-'90s Scare Dem Crew with Bounty Killer. This what I think of when I think about dancehall - not Sean Paul and his ilk. This is real gutta gwime dancehall, 'nuf respek: a heavy synthesized beat with Jamaican flava and honest-to-goodness toasting, not rapping. Tasty.
