submeat's top 100 tracks of 2003: songs to download and love

#85 "Powerless (Say What You Want)," Nelly Furtado (Dreamworks)
Yes, it's a bit didactic, but didactic can also equal empowering. Taking on the topic of "saying what you want," with an opening verse about whitewashing ethnicity in the media, Furtado at the least should get points for chutzpah - especially for making this the first single off her sophomore album, Folklore. Musically, she throws in everything she can, from a phat bassline to a banjo and woodwinds, and it works seamlessly. Not as catchy as "I'm Like A Bird," perhaps, but also not nearly so annoying; on the radio, this really is the proverbial breath of fresh air amidst all the clutter and bullshit.
