alright, I've barely blogged anything about music since I got back online yesterday. I'm in the process of whittling down almost 200 songs into my top 50 of 2002. so many good songs, so few slots. among those songs getting cut:
elton john's "this train don't stop there anymore," his first good single in years, with a very nice train trip-as-relationship metaphor. magnificent video, too.
"dy-na-mi-tee" from ms. dynamite. I really like her, but wish she had a bit more grit to her solo stuff, like she did on sticky's "booo!"
fischerspooner are, thus far, a more interesting concept than group. "emerge" is a prime example.
"'03 bonnie and clyde" is a good single, especially considering beyonce interpolates a bit of prince's "if I was your girlfriend." but from jay-z I expect great singles, not merely good ones. there are more original ideas in hip-hop than reworking an old 2pac song, jigga. especially considering 'pac's still releasing beyond-the-grave albums (afeni, this'll be remembered later).
normally, a rap record with a technoid backing track and great spitters on it would be a sure shot. but there's just something lacking from eve featuring jadakiss and styles's "double r what" - fire, maybe? unsure.
patty loveless' mountain soul is a stunningly good album; she's finally found her niche, and it's definitely bluegrass. "the boys are back in town" is fine 'n all, but there are finer tracks to be found on the album (expect to see at least one on my top 50).
"call me" by tweet isn't "oops (oh my)." that's its only crime.
"hella good" might've made my top 20 back in, say, '84. but no doubt, this ain't '84. and the competition's too good this year. come to think, it would've been in '84, too.
alcazar might get my award for "most blissfully cheesy euro single of 2002." but that won't get "crying at the discotheque" in my top 50.
so many good country songs, so little time for the slightly sappy ones: darryl worley's "I miss my friend."
I know "don't happen twice," and I know "she thinks my tractor's sexy." and kenny chesney, "young" is neither.
so many good jimmy eat world singles, so little space: "the middle."
so many good bluegrass singles, so little space: "dagger through the heart" by dolly parton.
ditto: rhonda vincent's "I'm not over you."
amerie's "why don't we fall in love," as silky-smooth as r-and-b gets, is the winner of 2002's inaugural "sunshine anderson your single was thisclose, and while you're working on your sophomore album, how 'bout some singing lessons?" award.
regarding "marshall's been done to death" by freelance hairdresser: I like some of the "without me" boots fine. I don't need the stars on 45 version.
regarding nirvana's "you know you're right": see "'03 bonnie and clyde," remove the beyonce references.
so many good bluesy countryish singles, so little time: danni leigh's "sometimes."
