these are the current top 10 albums at north american college radio, and they make me kinda sad. it all seems so by-the-numbers, with so little daring involved. the donnas? ooh, girls playing rawk, very exciting. sigur ros is good, quite talented, but getting a little sleepy. badly drawn boy, beck, and jurassic 5 are records fucking made for college radio - fine, artistic sure, but they just kind of sit there staticly (is that a word?). bjork's hits are great, but why not just play the old records? I didn't even know rocket from the crypt were still around, and wish they weren't - they were dull in '95 (when I was a college radio music director), and that hasn't changed. and it just kinda goes on from there. I'm not saying there aren't worthy artists on college radio these days, and that there aren't incredible, boundary-shoving stations (wcbn from ann arbor being one sterling example), but there's something vaguely stale about much of it these days. what is it?
while the north american (largely u.s.) college radio charts feel moribund, those of canada's college stations don't. ignore the fact that this chart is a couple weeks old and look at the comparable breadth of music played (from chart attack) (and yes, I know it's not entirely fair to compare a top 10 to a top 50, and yes, you'll get over it):
