Oh, Manchester, So Much To Answer For

the grammy noms were announced about an hour ago in nyc. my one moment of gloating comes in that I did predict norah jones would sweep the top four categories: album (come away with me), record ("don't know why"), song (ditto), and new artist. apart from that, there are definitely some surprises. norah and vanessa fucking carlton are both up for record and song. avril lavigne, springsteen, and alan jackson are also up for song, but none of them made the cut for record, being replaced by eminem, nelly 'n kelly, and you-have-got-to-be-kidding-me nickelback. four of the five nods for album were easy picks: dixie chicks, eminem, norah, and springsteen. but nelly? for album of the year?? the academy went the safe route for new artist, too, naming just who you'd expect: avril, norah, ashanti, michelle branch, and john mayer (but interestingly, no carlton). much, much more analysis/thoughts to come later today.
