am feeling musically/intellectually re-energized this evening. have made two new mix cds in the last month - not comps, mixes - for paul and lesley, winners of my irregular trivia questions over at waking ear. lesley's mix, hot out of the burner, is titled "truth beauty freedom love," and it's one of the sharper things I've done in some time, if I do say so myself. I'd blog it, but don't want to spoil any surprises. suffice it to say that the segue from miles davis' "black satin" into panjabi mc's "mundian to bach ke" is - and I honestly don't mean to pat myself on the back here, do the segue yourself in winamp or musicmatch - really fucking good. I point this out because I'm proud of it, and because I think I've finally cracked my - er, mixer's block? or whatever it should be named.
part of my inspiration, I think, is dj/rupture. I first heard of him from matos, who named gold teeth thief as one of his top 10 albums of 2001. thanks to rupture's label soot, you can download the entire record for free, and it's definitely worth your time, no matter what speed your connection is. rupture mangles and marries sources so seemingly disparate as missy, barrington levy, kid606, and miriam makeba into a shockingly gorgeous, sometimes meaning-packed mosaic unlike anything you've ever heard. allow me to quote matos:
"... on this headwrecking two-part set, he reconstructs the sound of the world we live in. A former Boston drum & bass DJ currently residing in Spain, he mixes up hip-hop, dancehall, dub, Indian, North and South African music, gabber, glitchcore, and 20th-century composition into an unbelievably well-plotted whole: it’s simultaneously abrading and compulsively listenable like nothing since prime Public Enemy."
amen. in '02, rupture released minesweeper suite, which sounds like it unbelieveably goes a couple steps further. I've yet to hear it, because pretty much every record store in hampton roads, va sucks. but thanks to my best pal jeffy, who picked up a copy tonight at indy's finest, luna music (website under construction at moment), I should have one in my hot hands soon. yay.
if you love music - and if you've read this far, you do - you owe it to yourself to seek out dj/rupture. he damned well sounds like the future - and the history - of music to these ears.
