“America: What Time Is Love?” I already knew to be a great record. As Marcello Carlin pointed out Sunday, while the KLF’s The White Room is a bit lazy and lagging at moments as an album, once they rejiggered its tracks as singles, they shone and blinded all before them. What I didn’t realize is that in its full 8-plus minutes of glory – not the single edit – “America” is an epic, ridiculously brilliant production. It most reminds me of the full version of Frankie Goes To Hollywood’s “Two Tribes,” utterly over-the-top, a garbage burger of a track, loaded down with twice as much of everything, 400% more beef. And it works like like an autistic’s genius, shocking you repeatedly with its massed choirs, pealing horns, thumping technoid beats, and spoken-word interludes. Amazing.
