submeat's top 100 tracks of 2003: songs to download and love

#89 "Drop the Pilot," Mandy Moore (Epic)
On Coverage, Moore pulled off something her contemporaries have struggled with: she showed she's maturing into an adult pop artist. I'll now admit that my earlier remarks regarding the album may have been a bit overly effusive, but this is definitely, I still attest, a solid record, on which Moore covers singer-songwriters from the '70s and '80s, mostly with fine aplomb. One of the highlights is "Pilot," on which Moore takes on Joan Armatrading's most well-known songs (if you can call anything of Armatrading's "well-known"). There's a passion here not normally associated with the teenpop femme class of '99 (at least, when they're not singing about sex), and it burns beautifully. Kudos!
