#79 "Comin' From Where I'm From," Anthony Hamilton (So So Def)
Ignore that this fabulous debut single is on So So Def, 'cause you sure as hell wouldn't know it from listening (but give vile little Jermaine Dupri at least a soupcon of credit for signing Hamilton). Someone's been listening to his Bobby Womack records... the first time I heard this, I honestly believed it was circa '73, until I caught the chorus and realized what it was. Hamilton's refreshing proof that gutbucket soul still has a place in today's popular musical landscape. Excellent production, as well, which compliments and doesn't mask the grit in the singer's voice and lyrics.
